5 Tips for Onboarding Your New Cost Estimator

Whew! Your construction company just landed a fantastic cost estimator. The new hire is detail-oriented and has extensive field experience. But before you plug them into your estimating workflow, take a minute to think about your onboarding plan.

If you’re interested in long-term productivity and retention, a great onboarding experience is key for your estimator’s success. Experts say new hires are 50% more productive at companies with standard onboarding processes. Managers also report a 20% greater satisfaction with employees who have formal onboarding training. And 69% of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they’ve had a solid onboarding experience.

Get Started on the Right Path

If you’re ready to step up your onboarding game, you should work closely with your Human Resources department. Here are five great onboarding tips from our guide, How to Hire a Great Estimator:

  1. Cover all your paperwork bases. Your estimator should be afforded ample time to walk through all the typical HR steps like selecting insurance, setting up direct deposit, tax paperwork, and getting their ID badge and office access cards.
  2. Welcome the new estimator with proper introductions. Send an email to your team and stakeholders introducing the estimator, giving a summary of their qualifications, and highlight their area of focus and responsibilities. Encourage your team to provide support and make the new hire feel welcome.
  3. Provide access and instructions for tools and systems. Give the estimator a list of links and login information to get them up to speed.
  4. Don’t forget about training. Make sure your estimator knows who to contact or what training and support resources exist. A 2014 survey showed that companies investing at least $1,500 annually in training per employee have on average a 24 percent higher profit margin than businesses who spend less on training.   5. Check in regularly with your new estimator. For the next 30-90-120 day intervals, you should check in regularly. Make sure your new hire is fitting in with the team and communication is open and positive.
